Bodie Island Lighthouse Pond

The Bodie Island Project location is one of the most unique public project sites we’ve encountered. This mitigation project is situated at the northern end of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and National Park Service. Although historically degraded by agriculture, development, and natural erosional processes, the site is an important home to wintering waterfowl, a multitude of endemic coastal species, and a historic lighthouse visited by thousands each year.

EPR developed and implemented a detailed plan for controlling invasive and restoring native vegetation, including site and species-specific methods to optimize effectiveness and protect public and sensitive natural areas.

Controlling invasive species will restore functional wetlands and native plant communities and, in turn, provide a wide range of ecosystem benefits, including water quality, aquatic habitat, and species diversity.
